If you are looking to buy a home in Pinellas County, you owe it to yourself to look at Belleair homes for sale. Belleair and its’ little neighbor Belleair Bluffs lie right on the intercostal waterway on Gulf of Mexico, and this area is a perfect mix of small town living with the amenities of a metropolitan city. Belleair is simply an ideal community to raise a family or to live an active retirement lifestyle. There is a wide mix of single family homes and condos here, and while median prices are slightly higher in this area, there are still gems to be found here.
The roots of Belleair can be traced back to 1897, when railroad magnate Henry B. Plant opened his Belleview Hotel on a remote, sandy peninsula west of his rail lines in Tampa, what we now call Pinellas County. He ran a spur all the way to the remote hotel so wealthy guests and business associates could be dropped off literally at the front door, and business moguls, athletes, movie stars, and even Presidents stayed at the Bellevue Biltmore over the years. His son Morton Plant, namesake of Morton Plant Hospital, expanded the hotel to a massive golf complex with 243 guest rooms, and it was a Florida icon for decades. Changing times and competition from beach hotels on the islands proved too much for the grand hotel listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, and the site was redeveloped for condominiums. But Plant’s original wooden structure was preserved as the Bellevue Inn, and now is the centerpiece boutique hotel at Bellevue Place condominiums.
For golfers, Belleair Country Club golf has a special allure. It claims the title of Florida’s first course, and was designed by legendary golf course architect Donald J. Ross. The original course was crushed shell, and prevailing wisdom said that good golfing grasses wouldn’t grow in this heat. Morton Plant dedicated himself to finding grasses, fertilizers, and soil amendments that could withstand the Florida sun, and today, Belleair Country Club has two lush 18-hole courses that are as scenic as they are challenging. All Belleair homes for sale are in close proximity to a number of courses and clubs- Pine Crest & Palm Hill Country Club are ten minutes away, East Bay Golf Club and Largo Golf Course are just fifteen minutes away.
If you are considering Belleair homes for sale, don’t overlook the tiny community Belleair Bluffs. Nestled between Belleair and Largo, this little town is just under 1/2 a square mile, but it is big on community. Established in 1963 with a population of less than 800 residents, it has grown into a thriving little village of about 2200 residents. Indian Rocks Road bisects the town, and residents have easy access to West Bay Drive, giving them a short hop across the bridge to the beaches, and a straight shot east to US 19, the St. Pete/Clearwater Airport, and the Howard Franklin Bridge leading into Tampa. You can lead the quiet, small-town lifestyle, while you are just ten minutes from the beach, or to a major shopping mall in Largo!
